WIDESHUT

The installation WideShut consists of 13 motor driven umbrellas supported by a flexible light structure. In the installation setup the umbrellas are used as a projection surface for a data projections. 13 light sensors are reacting directly to changing light intensity of a video animation and are controlling the motor operation. By manually shading parts of the projection the visitor can additionally influence the movement of the umbrellas.

WideShut was build as 1: 4 scaled prototype for a light sensitive facade system. The structural core element consists of 3 beams, which are curved in one direction and are flowing the surface of a 3-sided pyramid. In combination the elements make up a 3-dimensional honey comb structure. In horizontal direction the elements are flexible and allow to form a curved faced surface. The load bearing vertical direction is static, as a consequence of the geometrical gearing of the comb structure.

Used as an intelligent façade system XTH-Berlin developed in cooperation with the environmental engineering firm Rentschler + Riedesser a passive energy concept for of a laboratory building for the University of Saarbrücken.
